Bee Maze Game
about
This game is designed to test the player's patience and dexterity who are around 4-9 years old. Using a magnetic pen, the player must guide a metallic bee through an obstacle labyrinth, with the goal to reach a flower field. However, caution is necessary as there's a hungry spider lurking nearby. The objective is to guide the bee to the flower field, collect a pollen ball, and successfully return it to the beehive.
process
The goal of this project was to design a maze game with a bee theme, centered around collecting pollen. Initially, the concept featured a maze composed of two interlocking hexagonal layers. However, crafting a durable and enjoyable wooden maze with limited resources and tools posed challenges. During the design process, I realized that rotating the maze while maintaining the movement of two separate balls without one slipping off would be difficult. After careful consideration, I simplified the design to a single-layer hexagonal maze.
I used a cottage theme, drawing inspiration from the flat illustrations commonly seen in children's toys and storybooks. The bee character takes the form of a magnetic ball, which players can control using a magnetic pencil.
After finalizing the conceptual design, I began developing a 3D printing map for the maze and creating a laser-cut plywood file for the maze border. The border also features engraved patterns to enhance the design. To bring the game to life with vibrant colors, I used an airbrush and alcohol-based acrylic paint.
result
I created a unique bee-themed hexagonal maze game using a laser cutter, 3D printing, resin, and airbrush, resulting in a visually appealing and engaging playing experience.
